Anxiety is a normal emotion that we all experience at times. We may feel anxious when faced with a problem in life, or making an important decision. Anxiety disorders, however, are different. They can cause distress that interferes with our day-to-day living. Anxiety disorders are partly genetic; they can arise in response to life stresses such as physical illnesses and financial difficulties. Common anxiety disorders include panic attack, generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, specific phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Management of anxiety disorders mainly involves cognitive behavioral therapy, medication, relaxation techniques and life style modification. Commonly used medications include antidepressants, or mild tranquillizers.
